Fans of Downton Abbey and Sherlock will love The English Wife by Lauren Willig. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars and best paired with toast, eggs, and coffee with a generous dollop of cream (no sugar).
Bayard (Bay) Van Duyvil and his wife Annabelle seem to have it all. They are celebrating the completion of their new home (a gift from Bay and a recreation of Annabelle's family home) with a ball. The party takes a turn for the worse when Bayard is found dead and Annabelle goes missing. Bay's sister Janie finds Bay just before he utters his last breath/word and starts to investigate the true lives of her brother and sister-in-law.
Janie begins to wonder if she really ever knew Bay or anything about his life. She soon uncovers scandal, scoundrels, romance, affairs, family secrets, and confusing identities while pursuing a little courtship of her own.
I loved how this book transported me into the opulence of the Gilded Age and all the twists and turns along the way. Filled with unexpected surprises and romance, The English Wife felt like a guilty pleasure. You will want to read it while wearing your fanciest athleisure and your finest jewels.
